John Carroll Lynch (born August 1, 1963)[1] is an American character actor and film director. He first gained notice for his role as Norm Gunderson in Fargo (1996). He is also known for his television work on the ABC sitcom The Drew Carey Show (1997–2004) as the title character’s cross-dressing brother, Steve Carey, as well as on four seasons of American Horror Story (2014–2019), most notably as breakout character Twisty the Clown. His films include Face/Off (1997), Zodiac (2007), Gran Torino (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Ted 2 (2015), The Invitation (2015), The Founder (2016), and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020). He made his directorial debut with the 2017 film Lucky.
Early life[edit]
Lynch was born in Boulder, Colorado.[1] He attended Regis Jesuit High School in Denver. He studied theater at The Catholic University of America, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1986.[2]
Career[edit]
Lynch was a member of the Guthrie Theater company. He starred in several productions, toured with the company and worked there for over eight seasons.[3][4]
Lynch made his feature film debut in Grumpy Old Men (1993). He gained notice in a supporting role as Norm Gunderson in the Coen brothers’ film Fargo (1996). His other notable films are Face/Off (1997), Bubble Boy (2001), Gothika (2003), Things We Lost in the Fire (2007), Gran Torino (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Paul (2011) and Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011). He portrayed Arthur Leigh Allen in Zodiac (2007) and the first establisher of McDonald’s, Mac McDonald, in The Founder (2016).
Lynch has also had an extensive career in television. He appeared in ABC sitcom The Drew Carey Show as the title character’s cross-dressing brother, Steve Carey. He has also been a regular cast member on series such as Close to Home, Carnivàle, Body of Proof and seasons 4, 5, 7 and 9 of American Horror Story.
In 2018, Lynch was cast in the lead role of Bud Carl in the CBS All Access drama One Dollar.[5] The series was cancelled after one season. In 2020, Lynch plays the lead role of Rick Legarski in the ABC crime drama series Big Sky, created by David E. Kelley.[6] After his character was killed off, he resurfaced as Wolf Legarski, Rick’s twin brother. He also co-starred in Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed film The Trial of the Chicago 7, as activist David Dellinger.

John Lynch (born 26 December 1961) is an actor and novelist from Northern Ireland. He won the AFI (AACTA) Award for Best Actor for the 1995 film Angel Baby. His other film appearances include Cal (1984), The Secret Garden (1993), In the Name of the Father (1993), Sliding Doors (1998), The Fall (2013–2016), Medici (2019), The Head (2020), and The Banishing (2021).
Lynch has also written two novels, Torn Water (2005) and Falling Out of Heaven (2010).
Early life[edit]
Lynch was born in Northern Ireland to a Northern Irish father, Fin Lynch, and an Italian mother, Rosina Pavone, better known as Rose.[1][2][3] He was raised as a Catholic.[1] His parents met in London, where his mother was a teacher.[4]
In 1968, when he was seven years old, he moved with his family to the townland of Corrinshego, where his father was from, in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Corrinshego, where he spent the rest of his childhood and teenage years, is on the western outskirts of Newry.[1][5][4] Lynch later attended St. Colman’s College in Newry. He began acting in Irish language plays at school during the early years of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. He is the eldest of the five children of his parents, his Italian mother being from Trivento, a town in the Province of Campobasso in Molise, Southern Italy.[2][3] His younger sister Susan and his nephew Thomas Finnegan are also actors.[3]

Lynch has appeared in numerous films related to Northern Ireland’s problems such as Cal (1984) with Helen Mirren,[5] for which, hewas nominated for BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles,[6] In the Name of the Father (1993) with Daniel Day-Lewis, The Railway Station Man (1992) with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, Nothing Personal and Some Mother’s Son (1996), also with Mirren, as well as the Irish-themed film Evelyn (2002).[7]
He starred as a supporting actor in Derek Jarman’s Edward II (1991), as Lord Craven in Agnieska Holland’s film of The Secret Garden (1993), as Tadhg in The Secret of Roan Inish (1994), and as Gerry in Sliding Doors (1998).[7]
Lynch played the part of football legend George Best in the 2000 film Best.[7] He played the lead in the Australian feature Angel Baby,[7] winning the Australian Film Institute award for best leading actor and the Australian Film Critics award for best actor of 1995.[8] He was nominated for a Satellite Film Award for the film Moll Flanders in 1996.[7] He worked with acclaimed Belgian director Marion Hansel on her adaptation of Booker-nominated author Damon Galgut’s novel, The Quarry (also known as La Faille; 1998),[5] which won Best Film at the Montreal Film Festival. He won Best Actor for the lead role in Best at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival in 2000.[7] He wrote and co-produced the film.[5]
In 2005, Lynch was nominated for an IFTA for his role in The Baby War.[9] He starred in Five Day Shelter as Stephen, which won a European Film Award and was in competition at the Rome Film Festival. He played the lead in Craig Vivieros’ first feature film, the prison drama Ghosted. He played the role of Wollfstan in Black Death, and appeared in the 2012 film version of Michael Morpurgo’s novel, Private Peaceful.[7]
Lynch is also a novelist. His first novel, Torn Water, was published in November 2005 by 4th Estate, a literary imprint of HarperCollins, and his second, Falling Out of Heaven, was published on 13 May 2010 by the same publisher.[5]
Personal life[edit]
Lynch married film-maker Mary McGuckian in 1997, having met her on the set of Words Upon the Window Pane a few years earlier.[4] They separated in 2008. He currently lives in Nice in the south of France with his current girlfriend, Christine, who is French.[1][3]

Подросток сразу записался в театральный кружок. В школьные годы Кэрролл успел поучаствовать в 19 постановках. Позже, в интервью, актер признавался, что это было неким способом убежать от реальности — от чувства страха, проблем и конфликтов.
Семью Джона, по его признанию, нельзя было назвать счастливой. Родители постоянно ссорились и вымещали недовольство на детях. Часто Линч попросту находил любое занятие за пределами дома, не желая возвращаться туда. Все стало намного проще, когда отец и мать решили развестись.
После школы подросток поступил в театр при католическом университете Америки. К слову, там уже училась старшая сестра. Нора получила статус бакалавра. А Джон, окончив высшее учебное заведение, начал проходить прослушивание везде, где мог.
В итоге его взяли в Театр Гатри в Миннеаполисе. Дебютной ролью стал персонаж существа в спектакле «Франкенштейн». Следующие 8 лет в биографии артиста были связаны с постановками. Личная жизнь

Правда, дебют на телевидении состоялся много позже. Только в 1993 году Кэрролл получил эпизодическую роль в комедии Дональда Петри «Старые ворчуны». В течение нескольких лет новоявленный актер засветился в ряде картин — «Одно убийство», «Красивые девушки», «Фрейзер».
Но признание американец получил после участия в фильме братьев Коэн «Фарго». Джону достался персонаж Норма Гундерсона, эдакого подкаблучника, мужа полицейской. Кроме него в киноленте снялись такие звезды, как Уильям Мэйси, Стив Бушеми и Фрэнсис Макдорманд.
