Caps Lock ⇪ Caps Lock is a button on a computer keyboard that causes all letters of bicameral scripts to be generated in capital letters. It is a toggle key: each press reverses the previous action. Some keyboards also implement a light, to give visual feedback about whether it is on or off. Exactly what Caps Lock does depends on the keyboard hardware, the operating system, the device driver, and the keyboard layout. Usually, the effect is limited to letter keys. Letters of non-bicameral scripts (e.g. Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi) and non-letter characters are generated normally.

History[edit]

The Caps Lock key originated as a Shift lock key on mechanical typewriters. An early innovation in typewriters was the introduction of a second character on each typebar, thereby doubling the number of characters that could be typed, using the same number of keys. The second character was positioned above the first on the face of each typebar, and the typewriter’s Shift key caused the entire type apparatus to move, physically shifting the positioning of the typebars relative to the ink ribbon. Just as in modern computer keyboards, the shifted position was used to produce capitals and secondary characters.

The Shift lock key was introduced so the shift operation could be maintained indefinitely without continuous effort. It mechanically locked the typebars in the shifted position, causing the upper character to be typed upon pressing any key. Because the two shift keys on a typewriter required more force to operate and were meant to be pressed by the little finger, it could be difficult to hold the shift down for more than two or three consecutive strokes, therefore the introduction of the Shift lock key was also meant to reduce finger muscle pain caused by repetitive typing.^{[citation needed]}

Mechanical typewriter shift lock is typically set by pushing both Shift and lock at the same time, and released by pressing Shift by itself. Computer Caps Lock is set and released by the same key, and the Caps Lock behavior in most QWERTY keyboard layouts differs from the Shift lock behavior in that it capitalizes letters but does not affect other keys, such as numbers or punctuation. Some early computer keyboards, such as the Commodore 64, had a Shift lock but no Caps Lock; others, such as the BBC Micro, had both, only one of which could be enabled at a time.^{[citation needed]}

Abolition[edit]

There are some proposals to abolish the caps-lock key as being obsolete.^[1][2][3] Pieter Hintjens, the CEO of iMatix, started a «Capsoff» organization proposing hardware manufacturers delete the Caps Lock key.^[1] Google has removed the Caps Lock on the Chromebook keyboard, replacing it with the «Everything Button»; the caps-lock function is then reproduced using an «alt» key combination.^[4][5]

In fact, the current German keyboard layout standard DIN 2137-01:2018-12 specifies the function of the key as optional, to be replaced by other keys or key combinations. It recommends the function only to be invoked when it is pressed simultaneously with the Ctrl key, while otherwise it acts as a “left AltGr key”, thus enabling touch typists to access all key combinations using AltGr without using two fingers of the same hand, which is considered to be an ergonomic advantage. As a side effect, any inadvertent pressing of this key without pressing another key simultaneously has no effect.

Behavior[edit]

Typical Caps Lock behavior is that pressing the key sets an input mode in which all typed letters are uppercase, if applicable. The keyboard remains in Caps Lock mode and would generate all caps text until the key is pressed again. Keyboards often include a small LED to indicate that Caps Lock is active, either on the key itself or in a dedicated indicators area, where Scroll lock and Num lock indicators are also located. On the original IBM PC keyboard, this LED was exclusively controlled by the keyboard. Since the introduction of IBM AT, however, it is under control of the operating system. Small keyboards, such as netbook keyboards, forgo the indicators to conserve space, instead providing software that gives an on-screen or audio feedback.

In most cases, the status of the Caps Lock key only changes the meaning of the alphabet keys, not that of any other key. Microsoft Windows enforces this behavior only when a keyboard layout for a Latin-based script is active, e.g. the «English (United States)» layout but not the «Persian» layout. However, on certain non-QWERTY keyboard layouts, such as the French AZERTY and the German QWERTZ, Caps Lock still behaves like a traditional Shift lock, i.e., the keyboard behaves as if the Shift key is held down, causing the keyboard to input the alternative values of the keys; example the «5» key generates a «%» when Caps Lock is pressed. This is not true for the layout «German (IBM)».

Depending on the keyboard layout used, the Shift key, when pressed in combination with a Latin-based letter button while Caps Lock is already on, is either ignored, or reverses the effect of Caps Lock, so that typed characters are in lowercase again. Microsoft Windows enforces the latter. RISC OS offers both – Caps Lock alone chooses the former, Shift-Caps Lock the latter.

While the typical locking behavior on keyboards with Caps Lock key is that of a toggle, each press reversing the shift state, some keyboard layouts implement a combi mode,^{[example needed]} where pressing a Shift key in Caps Lock mode will also release the Caps Lock mode, just as it typically happens in Shift lock mode.

Some keyboard drivers^{[example needed]} include a configuration option to deactivate the Caps Lock key. This behavior allows users to decide themselves whether they want to use the key, or to disable it to prevent accidental activation.

In the Unix communities of the ex-USSR countries, Caps Lock key is traditionally used as input language switcher, convenient for usage with touch typing. Support for this is present in KDE,^[6] GNOME and other desktop environments. Default Russian and Ukrainian layouts for FreeBSD specify Caps Lock as input language switcher. In Microsoft Windows, however, third-party utilities are needed to enable this behavior.^[7][8] In such configurations, the original Caps Lock function is reached with the ⇧ Shift+⇪ Caps Lock combination.

Precautions[edit]

Most apps that request users to input a password do not display it on screen, so as not to expose it to prying eyes. A user who does not pay proper attention to the Caps Lock indicator, however, might end up typing the wrong password (in which all small letters become capital letters or vice versa). As such, help guides, tech support materials, and app user interfaces may include warnings on checking the Caps Lock state before typing a password. In Microsoft Windows login screens, a warning that Caps Lock is on is shown in a balloon near the field. In macOS, when Caps Lock is on, a Caps Lock symbol (⇪) is displayed inside a password field.

Placement[edit]

Since its inception, the IBM PC keyboard had a Caps Lock. In the first version for PC/XT, Caps Lock was located to the bottom right of the letter keys area. However, subsequent models switched the places of the Caps Lock key and the Control key. As such, Caps Lock has since been placed on left edge of the keyboard, above the Shift key and below the Tab key, next to letter A. This layout has become the de facto popular standard.

The keyboards of some early computer terminals, including the Teletype Model 33 ASR and Lear-Siegler ADM-3A, the Apple II and a few Apple Keyboard models retained the Control key where PC/XT first had it; Caps Lock was either absent on these devices or was placed elsewhere. This layout was preserved for later workstation systems and is often associated with Unix workstations. Keyboards from Sun Microsystems came in two layouts; «Unix» and «PC-style», with the Unix layout having the traditional placing of the Control key and other keys.^[9] The Amiga computers all had both the Control key and Caps Lock key in this spot at half the width.

Some users of keyboards with Caps Lock on the left remap the keys to exchange Control and Caps Lock, finding the traditional location more ergonomic for using programs benefiting from use of the Control key. Keyboard layout preferences specifically to address this need are available in some operating systems. Some keyboards even provide a switch on the bottom to logically swap the two keys in hardware.^[10][11]

The Happy Hacking Keyboard and the keyboards produced for OLPC XO computers also have the Control key in this location, while not including a Caps Lock.^[12] Beginning with the Google Cr-48, Chromebooks have omitted Caps Lock in favor of either a Search button or an «Everything Button».^[13] However, holding down Alt and pressing the Everything Button enables Caps Lock, which is enabled until Shift is pressed.^[5]

International Caps Lock Day[edit]

June 28 and October 22 are semiannually observed as International Caps Lock Day as a parody holiday created in October 2000 by Derek Arnold, a user on Metafilter. The second observation on June 28 was added by Arnold in memory of American pitchman Billy Mays.^[14][15][16]

Что такое Капс Лок на компьютере?

Капс Лок – это удобный и функциональный инструмент, которым комфортно пользоваться, если нужно написать слово, словосочетание или целое предложение прописными буквами. Клавиша предназначается для автоматической смены регистра, однако позволяет изменить только буквы – при ее нажатии цифры и прочие символы печатаются без изменений.

Расположение Капс Лок достаточно удобно для пользователя. На стандартной клавиатуре клавиша находится в левом ряду под кнопкой Tab – слева от буквы «А». Функцию оптимально использовать для написания целого ряда букв. Если же необходимо выделить только одну букву, то для этого достаточно прибегнуть к нажатию и удержанию кнопки Shift.

Как включить Капс Лок на компьютере?

Переход к режиму прописных букв производится однократным нажатием Капс Лока. Чтобы выключить функцию, достаточно произвести повторное нажатие. Если в клавиатуре предусмотрена световая индикация, то при включении Капс Лока в правом верхнем углу раскладки загорается светодиод. При выключении заглавных букв зеленый индикатор, соответственно, гаснет.

Стоит отметить, что большая часть программ в Интернете, требующих авторизации пользователя, отличается повышенной чувствительностью к регистру, поэтому при случайном нажатии Капс Лока логин и пароль будут введены неправильно. В общении во Всемирной Паутине под Капс Локом понимают слова или фразы, которые написаны заглавными буквами. Часто их можно встретить ВКонтакте, а также в интернет-сообществах – на форумах, в блогах, чатах. Использование Капс Лока считается плохим тоном и подразумевает под собой крик, повышение голоса.

У многих людей подобное написание вызывает раздражение, поскольку фразы, сплошь составленные из больших букв, тяжелы к прочтению. На большинстве ресурсов неуемное использование клавиши не приветствуется, а на некоторых находится под запретом.

Иногда Капс Локс целесообразно включать для выделения какого-нибудь слова – чтобы подчеркнуть его значимость, но обычно в том же ВКонтакте постоянно нажатая клавиша свидетельствует об ограниченном словарном запасе пользователя и указывает другим посетителям на его слабость как оппонента.

Подсчитано, что к применению Капс Лока прибегают около двух третей новичков, которые только начинают осваивать Интернет. Часто им кажется, что таким способом они могут выделить свою главную мысль. Функции

• Механические пишущие машинки требовали при печати нанесения удара по клавише с определённым усилием, чего было трудно достичь, одновременно удерживания клавишу Shift мизинцем. На компьютерных клавиатурах это более не представляет проблемы, поскольку нажатие кнопки не требует приложения усилий.
• Стандартное положение клавиши Caps Lock — во втором ряду клавиатуры около буквы «A». Для такой клавиши это слишком доступное место: с одной стороны, её легко случайно нажать; с другой — на её месте можно было установить более часто используемую клавишу.
• В Фидонете и Интернете текст, набранный ПРОПИСНЫМИ БУКВАМИ, интерпретируется как крик; пользователю, который злоупотребляет регистром символов, обычно советуют: «Не капси» или «Нажми Caps Lock». Без клавиши Caps Lock «кричать» будет не так легко.
• В современных текстовых процессорах имеется целый ряд способов оформить заголовок или изменить регистр уже напечатанного текста.

В 2001 году в Швеции была запущена первая кампания против клавиши Caps Lock — anticAPSLOCK.

В 2006 году группа пользователей под названием CAPSoff, возглавляемая Питером Хинтьенсом, выступила за удаление Caps Lock с клавиатуры. В качестве альтернативного варианта они предлагают поместить клавишу Caps Lock рядом со Scroll Lock.

Нет общепринятого мнения о том, что расположить на освободившемся месте. Предлагаются такие варианты:^[3][4]

• клавишу Ctrl;
• второй Enter или Backspace;
• две клавиши меньшего размера;
• клавишу управления буфером обмена.

Клавише Caps Lock иногда назначают действие «переключение раскладки». В Unix эта функциональность изначально присуща X Window System, в то время как в Microsoft Windows она может быть реализована при помощи специальных программ типа Keyboard Ninja и Punto Switcher, либо правкой реестра.

Устройства без Caps Lock

Суть[править]

Огромное количество лулзов про сабж связано с тем, что с развитием доступного интернета превалирующими типажами пользователей всевозможных чатов, форумов и блогов стали являться быдло, гламурные кисо и прочие некошерные персонажи с повышенным ЧСВ.

Вариант первый[править]

В случае когда желание выделиться из толпы обратно пропорционально количеству головного моска, а также при справедливом подозрении, что содержание текста не привлечёт внимания, некошерные персонажи начинают использовать самые уёбищные из доступных им методов, такие как:

• ПОСТОЯННО ВКЛЮЧЕННЫЙ КАПСЛОК
• Выделение САМЫХ ВАЖНЫХ мыслей в сообщении, чтобы ПОНЯТНЕЕ было
• ПрЫгАюЩиЕ БуКоВы (не путать с w:CamelCase). Казалось бы, при чём тут [[TeX|]]?
• 3амена 6уков в словосо4етаниях п0)(0}|{ими циферами и 3н@к@ми. 1/I1 D4}|{3 H3n0X0}|{1M1.
• использование_подчёркиваний_вместо_пробелов (также не следует путать со snake case). Алсо используется для акцентирования внимания _нормальными_ людьми (причём, ЧСХ, нормальные люди пробелов при этом не убирают), возможно в связи с выделением такого текста красным в фидо и подчеркиванием в большинстве jabber-клиентов.
• использование….случайного.количества…точек..вместо.пробелов…(а.. иногда …и…..вместе)
• расстановка пробелов перед знаками препинания ,коих обычно более 9000 ,в сообщении или ,как вариант ,полное игнорирование этих самых пробелов,несмотря на негодование анонимуса . Объясняется разной скоростью распространения сигнала от мозга к правой и левой руке для тех,кто быстро печатает одним пальцем двух рук.
• в терминальной стадии ФГМ — использование в конце и даже посередине каждого предложения либо кастрированного смайла), либо как минимум одного восклицательного знака!
• Вставление (!!) перед или после (!!!) самых важных (!!!), по мнению пишущего, моментов, одного (!) или нескольких (!!!) восклицательных знаков в скобках.
• в особо запущенных случаях — использование в конце предложения более 9000 восклицательных/вопросительных знаков и скобочек!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)))))))))))))))))))

Особо содрогаются при виде сабжа бывшие фидошники, привыкшие к порядку. Ибо в их фиде капс означает громкий крик. По мере ассимиляции в интернетах им, всё же, становится пох и это. Но тем не менее.

Исходя из этого — использование CAPSLOCK’а зачастую является лишь одной из составляющих быдловыделения. У большинства поциентов это со временем лечится, но не всегда. Быдлонаписание является одним из признаков ФГМ.

Вариант второй[править]

Суть второго варианта заключается в данной фразе — «ПОТОМУ ЧТО МНЕ ТАК НРАВИТЬСЯ!!!)))))» (как правило, с мягким знаком в слове «нравитЬся» и обязательно с наличием одного или более восклицательных знаков в конце предложения). Показатель развитого ФГМ (см. пример). Неотложная помощь — курс лечебных ударов клавиатурой по ебалу. Более подробное раскрытие темы.

Вариант третий[править]

Как известно, многие вполне нормальные программисты создают такие ИдентификаторыВСвоихХорошоЧитаемыхИсходниках. Ну или вот_такие_идентификаторы. И даже ТАКИЕ_ИДЕНТИФИКАТОРЫ_КОНСТАНТ. Связано это с тем, что пробел не может входить в идентификатор, так как является разделителем слов. А если необходимо создать объект «левый глаз Васи Пупкина», то называть его приходится именно как ЛевыйГлазВасиПупкина или левый_глаз_Васи_Пупкина.

У программистов такую манеру написания переняли кулхацкеры (уже с намёком на ЧСВ), а у последних прочие вышеописанные личности.

Вариант четвёртый[править]

Когда-то давно, ещё в этом нашем Фидо, считалось, что текст, набранный с CAPSLOCK’ом, означает крик. Такой крик CapsLock’ом часто встречался в постах разнообразных бокланов, отстаивавших какую-нибудь свою бокланскую хуету типа «БЕЙ ЖИДОВ!!!». Соответственно, стандартная реакция на CAPSLOCK — «Не кричи».

То, что выглядит, как нажатый и забытый cAPSLOCK — тоже не просто так. Логика, если это слово здесь уместно, такая: написание с большой буквы означает уважение, ergo написание с маленькой буквы — неуважение, а написание вОТ тАК — лютая ненависть. Впрочем, как правило, это означает то же, что и просто злоупотребление CapsLock’овой экспрессией: что автор текста — боклан.

И ещё: в plain text (в том же фидо) _прочерки_между_словами_вместо_пробелов_ означают просто-напросто подчёркивание текста.

Расовая теория имени Мицгола[править]

Наличие печатания капслоком у девушек/женщин — признак арийского происхождения. Следовательно, если девушка вам пишет заглавными буквами, то она точно светловолосая арийка и ни в коем случае не является ЕРЖ.

• Эта клавиша полюбилась не только школьникам с башорга, но и кое-кому из музыкальных исполнителей. В частности, один голландец по имени Joris Vijfhuizen взял себе её название в качестве сценического псевдонима и теперь играет в клубах breakcore (и хорошо играет, надо заметить!).

• Капслоком пишутся все реплики Смерти или его заместителей в русских переводах произведений Терри Пратчетта. В оригинале речь Смерти — т. н. SMALL CAPS. Такой шрифт называется капителью.

• Одно из немногих годных применений Caps Lock реализовано в приложении для видеокомпоузинга Adobe After Effects. Врубив капс, можно запретить рендеринг текущей композиции, что иногда бывает удобно, ибо какой кусок видео где лежит — ясно, а ждать, пока АЕ отрисует 125 слоёв шедевра — западло. Многие неопытные юзеры начинают срать кирпичами, когда видят чёрную квадратную дыру вместо рекламы гуталина «Ромашка». Правда, этот режим заботливо обрамляет красной рамочкой окно композа, но кто ж, блядь, читает мануал!? То же самое капс делает в винрарнейшей монтажке Final Cut Pro.

• Как правило, забиндена под переключение языка ввода (или под левый контрол) чуть более, чем у половины линуксоидов.

• Под виндой Caps Lock можно забиндить на переключение языка прогами Punto Switcher (работает отвратно), LSwitch (нужно добавить в автозагрузку lswitch.exe 20, имеются баги) или ReCaps. Последняя имеет минимум глюков и тормозов. Анонимус рекомендует.

• Зато та же Punto Switcher имеет функцию отключения капса вообще, а при наличии прямых рук это можно сделать простой правкой реестра. Более того, не требующая установки прога SharpKeys позволяет не просто отключить Caps, а переназначить под любую другую клавишу.

• Самые прошаренные знают, как настроить переключение по капсу (и вообще абсолютно любой клавише) стандартными средствами винды. Из минусов — теряется возможность вводить обратную кавычку (`) и тильду (~), которые в мастдае и так не нужны (це ж вам не Unix какой-нибудь). Ну и всеми забытую букву «Ё», конечно же.

• В отечественной карточной онлайн-игре KlanZ есть очень характерный персонаж с Trollface’ом, что как бы символизирует.

• В своё время некоторые анонимусы активно использовали плагины для известной программы Winamp. Один из таких плагинов, led keyboard, включал светомузыку на клавиатуре. Суть в том, что плагин транслировал данные спектроанализатора на три лампочки (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock), заставляя их мигать в такт с проигрываемой композицией. Беда в том, что функции клавиш продолжали действовать, что наиболее заметно при использовании Caps Lock.

• Боевой капслок был применен amazon.co.uk к книжке «WikiLeaks documents expose US foreign policy conspiracies». После того как анонимус отставил множество комментов ненависти, амазон сначала убрал книжку из продажи, а потом добавил к ее названию «[DOES NOT CONTAIN TEXT OF CABLES]».

• В отечественной игре «King’s Bounty — Легенда о рыцаре» есть Дух, КОТОРЫЙ РАЗГОВАРИВАЕТ ИСКЛЮЧИТЕЛЬНО CAPS LOCKOM.

• Пишущие КАПСЛОКОМ были обстёбаны в Обливионе-с-пушками.

• На просьбу не капсить особо обижаются чуваши. По понятным причинам.

• Все знают, что в иврите пишут справа налево. Но не все знают, что там нет различия больших и малых букв. По сути, в иврите пишут капслоком. До введения гражданского шрифта аналогичная ситуация наблюдалась в русском.

• В расово верном языке Oberon-2 от Никлауса Вирта все КЛЮЧЕВЫЕ СЛОВА пишутся капслоком.

• Хороший ответ на возмущение в духе «Выключи Caps Lock» или «Перестань кричать» — «НЕ МОГУ, У МЕНЯ ВСЕМОГУЩИЙ ТЕКСТ-ПРОЦЕССОР» (имеется в виду культовый рассказ Стивена Кинга, в котором фигурировал компьютер для набора текстов исключительно прописными буквами).

• В GTA 3 и Vice City капс включает миссии таксиста, скорой, пожарного или копа.
